Squidoo Cracks Down On Product Review Lenses – Kinda

Lots of new drama going on at Squidoo in regards to product lenses that include “Best” “Top” or “2013” in the title. A week ago I predicted that this was coming. As a result, I changed all my titles. Score for me! So far, no locked lenses today. And they have been on a lens locking spree today! If you take a peek in the Squidoo HQ forums it is nothing but carnage in there.

The good news to come out of this is that Squidoo is actually giving us some direction in terms of what they are looking for in lenses and what will get a product review lens locked. If you missed it, check out the product lens guidelines post up on Squidoo HQ. A follow-up was done on The Elements Of A Personal Lens today.

Unfortunately, the example of a really great products lens looks like a really shitty lens. Even worse, the lens has a purple star. But the real kicker here? Bonnie of Squidoo HQ has claimed the lens as her own! It is really a kick in the teeth for her to parade out her own crappy lens as a “good” example when lensmasters are getting actual high quality lenses locked. And I suspect that anyone who creates a product lens in a similar fashion to this one will get it locked. But, that’s just my take on it. 😉

So, how can you keep making money with Squidoo?

Adhere to their personalization requests. Make it up if you have to. Seriously. If you’ve ever wanted to dabble in fiction, here is your chance.

Make a new account for each lens or for small batches of lenses. This is the only way to prevent getting entire accounts locked. Use a proxy if you are worried about IP tracing – or open wifi networks.

Do NOT use Squidoo modules for monetization. As long as they are still allowing us to use our own affiliate links – do it!! This way, if your lens gets locked, you will not lose any accrued money.

If you have any title with “Best” or “Top” or “2013” in them, change the titles immediately!!! If you do not, then you run the risk of getting the lenses locked. Some good options to change to are: Good, Ideal, Great, Fave/Favorite, Cool, Perfect Choices, and so on.

So far, I’m still earning. Hope you are too!

Do they want to make money? Changing so many titles in one go cannot be good for seo. They must have lost thousands from all of these lockings do they care? It just doesn’t seem a good business move that thye destroy a lot of lenses that are bringing clicks and revenue to the site in exchange for little cute lenses about how to create a curly willow plant or how to make a doll out of a cute lotion bottle, its laughable.

Yeah, their actions are pretty bizarre these days. And please tell me that there is not actually a lens about how to make a doll out of a cute lotion bottle! haha, can’t imagine anyone is looking that up 😉

    Hi Henley,

I read two of your books – very insightful, BTW. I’d like to write more lens but I was curious about your advice to remove words like “Best” , “Top” etc. Does that mean you keep the existing URL that may have those words in it or do you change your URL as well?

    • Henley Griffin says:

Hi Bonnie! Glad the books were of use to you :)

Yes – keep the same URL. You can actually still rank for ‘best’ with it in the URL, which is what you want. For example, say you have a lens with the URL /best-3D-tvs-2013/ but you change your title to something stupid like “Seeing 3D in My Home Movie Room” — you will rank for best 3D tvs 2013 as well as 3D home movie room.

On the titles that I have changed, I have moved “best” to the introduction module title and I’m hoping that will not get my lens locked. In the most recent lockings this week, I had zero lenses locked, so it is working so far! Let me know if I can help with anything else!
